The Madras High Court, established in 1862, is one of India's three chartered High Courts with seats at Chennai and the Madurai Bench (since 2004). It has Original Side jurisdiction for the City of Chennai and Appellate Side jurisdiction state-wide. Tenancy follows the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants Act, 2017; stamp duty the Indian Stamp Act with Tamil Nadu amendments. The State has a separate Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The TNREAT (Tamil Nadu Real Estate Appellate Tribunal) and the TN-RERA operate from Chennai.
